10-Year U.S. Treasury Yield Surpasses 5% Amid Rising Borrowing Costs

The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield surpassed 5% on Monday, reaching its highest level in three years. Despite efforts by the Trump administration to stabilize markets, bond investors continued pushing rates higher.

This trend raises borrowing costs across the economy and could weigh on both stock market valuations and Bitcoin (BTC). Bitcoin prices have already been competing with safer government bonds offering higher yields.

As yields rise, Treasury bonds become more competitive compared to stocks. Investors may prefer locking in strong low-risk returns instead of taking on stock market risks. Analysts warn this could pose a significant threat if yields continue climbing.

The 10-year yield has now hit its highest level in 52 weeks. Anthony Ghee, Chief Investment Officer for equities at Merrill and Bank of America Private Bank, described the situation as investors face rising competition from safer assets.

Rising bond yields also increase corporate borrowing costs, reducing profits that support stock prices. This year’s pressure has been amplified by government large-scale borrowing and AI infrastructure debt.

Bitcoin faces opportunity cost challenges at around $77,800, where it has traded with slight gains today. The asset has maintained relative stability despite yield fluctuations so far.

The logic is straightforward: a 5% safe Treasury yield requires riskier assets like Bitcoin to offer higher returns to remain attractive. Assets failing to deliver may face the most direct pressure as rates rise.

This week could bring rapid changes, with traders pricing in a higher likelihood of rate hikes at the upcoming Fed meeting. The decision could either ease or intensify pressure on risk assets.
