Abra Strategy Tokens Automatically Included in Eligible Custody from Issuance

AbraFi Labs has introduced a structure where certain strategy tokens issued by the company are automatically included in an eligible custody framework from the moment of issuance. This connects token issuance with custody to streamline management procedures for institutional digital asset products.
Fireblocks announced in a press release that it has integrated AbraFi Labs' strategy tokens into Fireblocks Trust Company's eligible custody accounts, allowing automatic placement without additional manual steps. Initially, only some strategy tokens will be supported upon launch.
Strategy tokens are synthetic assets containing pre-set trading strategies within smart contracts to pursue profit generation. Once AbraFi Labs issues a token, it is automatically transferred to the custody system and isolated in separate managed accounts (SMA) for each client.
The core of this integration lies in connecting Abra's token issuance infrastructure with Fireblocks' custody framework. Previously, multi-party computation (MPC) was used to distribute private key functionality across multiple components, reducing reliance on a single key for transaction approval. However, Abra explained that MPC is not considered eligible custody under regulations but rather a control mechanism.
Fireblocks Trust Company is a limited-purpose trust company authorized by the New York State Department of Financial Services (NYDFS). It was registered with NYDFS as a limited-purpose trust company in August 2024. Limited-purpose trusts are classified as institutions permitted to hold digital assets on behalf of clients.
Eligible custody frameworks include procedures for client asset segregation, transaction approval processes, account statements, and reporting—all designed to protect assets. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) requires investment advisors holding client assets to entrust them to eligible custodians. Additional requirements apply regarding the custodian's asset storage and protection.
Abra Capital Management, an SEC-registered investment advisor, stated it manages client assets through separate managed accounts rather than pooled funds. However, even with eligible custody in place, market volatility, smart contract risks, protocol issues, and counterparty risk remain, and neither returns nor principal are guaranteed for strategy tokens.
Daryl Puryear, Abra's Chief Technology Officer, said the integration directly links AbraFi Labs' tokenization system with Fireblocks Trust Company's eligible custody to provide a workflow that meets strict compliance standards. By bundling issuance and custody into one process, operational procedures have been streamlined.
The focus of this integration is on connecting strategy token issuance with eligible custody to handle institutional client asset management in a single flow. Specific token lists and implementation schedules were not disclosed in the announcement. Whether this automation will lead to broader institutional product adoption remains to be seen through future product scope and performance data.
