Concerns have emerged that AI agents repeatedly executing on-chain transactions could strain blockchain processing capacity and fee structures. To date, no major network outages have been confirmed due to the spread of AI agents across Avalanche (AVAX), Ethereum (ETH), or Solana (SOL). Bart Smith, CEO of Avalanche Treasury Company ($AVAT), warned in a July 9 'Layer One' podcast that as AI agents directly participate in transactions, data processing, and financial activities, competition for block space could intensify. The podcast, shared by The Block, discussed Avalanche's ecosystem expansion and capacity issues related to AI.

AI agents can repeatedly execute trades or data requests without direct user intervention. When multiple applications operate simultaneously, actual transaction frequency and execution patterns—rather than just the number of users—determine blockchain resource usage. If several applications share the same block space on a single blockchain, increased activity from one service could impact fees and processing speeds for other users. The extent of strain varies based on network fee structures and resource separation levels.

Avalanche's proposed solution involves building application-specific independent networks. Avalanche L1 allows each network to have its own validators and execution environment, reducing the scope where usage spikes in one network directly affect others. Avalanche's official documentation states that existing subnets are now transitioning to L1 blockchains, enabling each L1 to independently configure execution environments, fee structures, and state management.

This structure aims to provide dedicated processing environments for AI agent applications that may concentrate transaction requests. However, no evidence has been provided that this architecture will resolve performance issues from increased AI agents or guarantee broader Avalanche adoption. A standard for recording AI agent identity and reputation on the blockchain is also being developed, with Ethereum's ERC-8004 proposing an identity registry, reputation registry for user feedback, and verification registry for independent validation.

Community posts have introduced ERC-8004-based agent usage in Avalanche's ecosystem, though this does not reflect official network usage statistics or market-wide adoption rates. Claims about over 1,600 registered AI agents on Avalanche using ERC-8004, approximately 80 institutional L1s, and a target to expand to 200 remain unverified by official sources or SEC filings.

Avalanche Treasury Company completed its merger on June 11 and began trading as AVAT on Nasdaq. SEC filings describe the company as a digital asset financial firm investing in the Avalanche ecosystem, holding approximately 1.53 million AVAX as of late June (SEC filing). The discussion focuses on blockchain capacity allocation for AI agent proliferation and Avalanche's multi-L1 structure, though actual network strain will depend on specific application execution patterns and usage volumes.
