Altcoin Gains Eroded as Bitcoin Weakness Persists Against Macro Assets

September's altcoin strength that led the market at the start of the month has quickly faded. Altcoins failed to gain traction during Bitcoin's rebound phase but saw steeper declines during downturns. According to a September 16 Bitfinex report 'BTC Needs Sustained Buying to Break Above its Floor,' all 28 major altcoin pairs closed higher from September 1-8, with an average rise of 10%—far outpacing Bitcoin's 1.4%. However, from September 8-15, 27 of the 28 altcoins fell, averaging a 7.9% decline compared to Bitcoin's 3.7% drop. Monthly, altcoin performance reversed to a 0.2% average loss, with only five assets retaining over half their initial gains. GeChi (GEC) led monthly gains at 34%, driven by its U.S. first spot ETF launch.

The key insight isn't just the lost gains but how they were relinquished: When Bitcoin rose 1.3% on Monday, altcoin averages fell 0.1%. But when Bitcoin dropped 3.3% on Tuesday, altcoins tumbled 4.9%, showing a beta of 1.46. This pattern has emerged four times since May, indicating altcoins underperform during Bitcoin-led rebounds but amplify losses in downturns—a trend supported by leveraged futures positions rather than sustained spot demand. For instance, Ethereum long liquidations on Tuesday totaled $190 million, similar to Bitcoin's figure despite Ethereum's market cap being roughly 1/6th of Bitcoin's.

Bitcoin underperformed against major asset classes from September 8-15, falling 3.7%—more than gold, S&P 500, and Nasdaq on a dollar basis. U.S. 10-year Treasury yields rose to 5%, while inflation-linked bonds closed at 2.62%, aligning with recent real yield trends. Bitcoin's correlation with the S&P 500 jumped from 0.20 to 0.76 between September 11-15, and with Nasdaq from 0.15 to 0.66, while gold correlation fell from 0.79 to 0.51. This suggests Bitcoin is trading more like high-beta equity assets than a traditional alternative investment during this pivotal phase.
