Avalanche (AVAX) Foundation Publishes Tokenomics Research Linking Value to AVAX

The Avalanche (AVAX) Foundation has revealed a direction for tokenomics research that aims to link ecosystem activity directly to AVAX value through validator and staker rewards. Final amendments or governance approvals have not been finalized yet. The foundation introduced this concept during the opening day of the 'Avalanche Summit 2026' in New York on September 16, where it outlined a framework for measuring, capturing, and distributing value created by the ecosystem.
The summit took place from September 16-17 in New York. The research focuses on how much economic activity generated within Avalanche's L1 and applications can be tied to AVAX demand and reward structures. While the L1 allows setting its own economic structure and validator system, network expansion may not immediately translate into value growth for Avalanche. The L1 is designed to allow application-specific fees and operational rules, meaning that ecosystem growth does not automatically connect to AVAX demand or validator rewards.
A community proposal discussed linking a portion of L1 fees to AVAX validator rewards instead of burning them, or splitting between burning and rewarding. However, this remains at the community proposal stage. The maximum AVAX supply is 72 million, with an initial issuance of 36 million. Transaction fees are burned, while validator rewards come from newly minted coins rather than existing supplies.
This research extends a 2026 July economic initiative by the Avalanche Foundation. Crypto Briefing reported that the study addresses ecosystem value measurement and capture, validator economics, and long-term staking incentives. Adjustments to staking reward structures and validator requirements are also part of the plan. ACP-285 lowers the minimum stake rate from 10% to 7.5%, while maintaining maximum stake rates and a 365-day long-staking reward rate. The change applies only to new stakes after the upgrade, not existing commitments.
ACP-267 raises the operational rate requirement for validator rewards eligibility from 80% to 90%. Both changes are tied to the Helicon upgrade, scheduled to activate on September 23 at 12:00 AM KST. The timing and impact of these proposals remain subject to verification as they move toward potential network implementation.
Community reactions have been mixed. Some argue that fee structures need redesigning to better connect L1 growth with AVAX demand, while others warn current reward levels and validator entry costs may limit economic participation. Both viewpoints reflect ongoing community discussions rather than official policy decisions.
