Base DeFi TVL Hits All-Time High at $5.7 Billion

Coinbase ($COIN)-developed Layer 2 network Base's decentralized finance (DeFi) total value locked (TVL) has hit a record high of $5.7 billion (approximately KRW 7.809 trillion). Base's TVL had previously fluctuated between $4.5 billion and $5.3 billion before rising to $5.7 billion recently. CryptoBriefing reported on August 17 that Base DeFi ecosystem's TVL reached $5.7 billion, though figures may vary depending on the timing of the data collection.

TVL represents the dollar value of assets locked in DeFi protocols, reflecting both the scale of deposited assets and their price fluctuations. A rise in TVL does not necessarily indicate increased user activity or trading volume, as it can also be driven by asset price increases without a significant increase in token quantities. Conversely, capital inflows may not significantly boost TVL if asset prices decline.

Base is an Ethereum Layer 2 network designed to reduce Ethereum's processing load while improving transaction speed and cost efficiency. Coinbase markets Base as a low-cost, fast transaction network. Built on Optimism's OP Stack, Base uses Ethereum (ETH) as its native gas token. The recent TVL milestone reflects the scale of assets deposited within the Base ecosystem.

CryptoBriefing noted that the current increase aligns with capital inflows into Base DeFi protocols and heightened network activity. However, the report did not present this rise as a confirmed indicator of future trends. While TVL shows the amount of funds tied up in services like lending and trading, understanding actual usage requires examining metrics such as transaction volume, stablecoin supply, active addresses, and protocol-specific deposits.

Previous reports from August 21 noted that DeFiLlama had recorded Base Chain's TVL at $519.72 million, which compares to the current $5.7 billion figure, indicating a recent expansion in dollar-denominated deposits within the Base ecosystem. However, whether this record TVL translates into sustained trading activity or user growth remains to be confirmed.
