Binance Lowers Margin Requirements for Six Tokens from 30% to 10%

Binance Lowers Margin Requirements for Six Tokens from 30% to 10%

Binance has lowered the collateral ratio for six tokens from 30% to 10%, which may reduce borrowing limits and margin availability for leveraged traders using these assets as collateral. Coinbase also plans to exclude 29 assets from its eligible collateral list.

The adjustments, effective September 18 at 3 p.m. KST, apply to cross-margin and portfolio margin accounts. The ratios for AUCTION, BLUR, GALA, HYPER, S, and SYRUP were reduced from 30% to 10%, while ARB, TAO, and WLD saw their ratios raised from 50% to 60%. Binance noted the changes would be completed within approximately 30 minutes.

The collateral ratio determines what percentage of an asset's market value is considered for borrowing or margin calculations. For a token valued at $100,000 (approximately KRW 138.7 million), the recognized collateral value drops from $30,000 (KRW 4.161 million) at a 30% ratio to $10,000 (KRW 1.387 million) at 10%, resulting in a $20,000 (KRW 2.774 million) decrease in recognized collateral value without price changes.

Binance warned that the margin ratio adjustment may affect borrowable amounts and withdrawable balances. For portfolio margin, the change could impact unified maintenance margin requirements (uniMMR), advising users to check their metrics. The exchange also cautioned that the adjustments could potentially lead to liquidations or losses, though actual margin calls, position reductions, or liquidation volumes remain undisclosed.

The changes do not affect spot trading support or market prices for the tokens. Binance simultaneously removed cross-margin pairs ENJ/USDC, GENIUS/USDC, CVX/USDC, GUN/USDC, and VANA/USDC, as well as isolated margin pair GENIUS/USDC, automatically settling positions and canceling pending orders.

Coinbase International Exchange plans to exclude 29 assets from eligible collateral starting September 29. These include AERO, ALGO, APT, ARB, ATOM, AVAX, BCH, BNB, BONK, CRV, DOT, FARTCOIN, FIL, ICP, INJ, JASMY, LTC, ONDO, PENGU, OP, PEPE, PUMP, SEI, SHIB, SUI, UNI, VET, XLM, and ZORA. Coinbase calculates collateral value by multiplying asset market price with a collateral weighting factor, noting that asset-specific haircut and limits may apply.

Both exchanges' adjustments differ in scope: Binance adjusted ratios for some assets while raising others, whereas Coinbase removed 29 assets from its collateral list. A September 17 Glassnode and Bybit joint report noted a shift toward more stable assets in derivatives markets, though this does not confirm a unified risk-reduction policy across exchanges.
