Bitcoin at $76,440 as Whale Positions and Options Strike Price Overlap

Bitcoin (BTC) has entered a critical range where large whale positions and options expiration strike prices overlap near $76,440. TradingBeats analyzed data following the U.S. Federal Reserve's interest rate hike on April 16, revealing that key risk levels are concentrated between $76,000 and $77,750.

The Fed raised its target federal funds rate range by 25 basis points to 3.75%-4.00% as of April 16. Post-decision, 20 addresses that previously held no significant positions established new $1 million+ BTC positions, with 12 being long and eight short. The newly established long positions total approximately $30.75 million (about ₩42.1 billion), while the short positions amount to roughly $25.64 million (about ₩35.1 billion). Although new longs slightly outnumbered shorts, the difference was minimal.

Existing large whale positions also clustered around similar cost bases, with common break-even points for $1 million+ BTC whales falling within the $76,000-$77,750 range. With Bitcoin's current price entering this zone, potential profit/loss thresholds align with present trading levels. Similar price ranges were observed in options markets, where the maximum pain point for expiring options was approximately $76,500, differing by less than 0.1% from current prices at that time. These options were scheduled to settle two hours later.

The maximum pain point refers to the price level at which option buyers would suffer the greatest losses upon expiration. However, this indicator alone does not necessarily predict actual price movement, as settlement timing, position sizes, and hedge trading also play roles. Liquidation clusters have similarly formed above and below current prices, with one side featuring $10 million+ whale positions nearing liquidation thresholds while the other risk zone requires larger price movements to reach.

This data suggests that rather than indicating strong directional bias from whales, recent activity shows overlapping entry points for whales, options expiration strikes, and liquidation risks within a narrow range. Bitcoin's price direction and market impact will be further assessed following option settlements and position changes.
