Bitcoin (BTC) developers have unveiled a long-term security roadmap to prepare for potential quantum computer threats around 2030. The proposal includes four initiatives: BIP-360, SHRINCS, Lifeboat, and DropKick, addressing cryptographic transitions and protecting existing assets.

Christine D. Kim, a Bitcoin developer, summarized the quantum-resistant measures. ZyCrypto reported on September 17 that developers are formalizing discussions about preparing for quantum computers potentially breaking asymmetric cryptography after 2030. While no quantum computer capable of such attacks has been confirmed yet, concerns exist that public keys could be used to calculate private keys and steal assets if left exposed long-term.

The roadmap aims to achieve quantum resistance across data, consensus, and execution layers by December 2029—a timeline aligned with post-quantum cryptography transition deadlines proposed by Microsoft ($MSFT), Cloudflare, and Google. BIP-360 introduces a new 'Pay-to-Merkle-Root' output format allowing users to keep public keys hidden until actual spending, reducing long-term attack risks. However, it does not fully address quantum attacks on transaction signatures during approval.

SHRINCS is a hash-based quantum-resistant signature scheme using SHA-256 with 48-byte public keys and minimum signature sizes of 548 bytes (stateful) or 5777 bytes (stateless). The larger data footprint could increase transaction size, affecting block space, fees, and hardware wallet performance.

Lifeboat and DropKick focus on rescuing assets held in existing addresses that have not been transitioned. Both use a commit-reveal structure to prove on-chain knowledge of address information before attackers. Bitcoin Optech described DropKick as a structure for users unable to migrate their quantum-resistant assets, though it carries risks of miner censorship during public disclosure. Lifeboat requires holding quantum-safe UTXOs first.

The roadmap remains in the proposal phase: BIP-360 and SHRINCS are drafts, while Lifeboat and DropKick are still under research. SHRINCS needs security proofs, third-party reviews, and sufficient test vectors. Handling existing assets exposed to quantum threats also remains unresolved.

Coinbase hosted a post-quantum Bitcoin workshop at Stanford University on September 9, where developers, cryptographers, researchers, institutional custodians, and hardware wallet experts discussed signature security, transaction size impacts, hardware performance, key management, and asset transfer procedures. The G7 Cyber Experts Group also urged organizational-level transitions to post-quantum cryptography by January 2026.
