Bitcoin Dormant Coins Move as 62% Transferred Over Weekend

Approximately 3,790 Bitcoin (BTC) coins that had been inactive for long periods moved between September 1-14. Sixty-two percent of this movement occurred over the weekend, according to data from Btcparser.com cited by Bitcoin.com News. The coins originated from wallets created between 2010 and 2017, which had no withdrawal records for years.

The most notable transaction involved a wallet created in 2013, which moved 113 BTC after 13 years of dormancy, valued at roughly $8.8 million (about 12 billion KRW) at the time. The trade was recorded at block height 966937.

The largest single movement in September occurred on September 6, when a wallet created in 2016 moved 1,260.776 BTC, accounting for about one-third of all dormant coin movements during the period. A total of 1,450.83 BTC was recorded as moving from 2016-created wallets over the same timeframe. Another 600 BTC moved from wallets created in 2010, while eight wallets created in 2013 each transferred 25 BTC.

Bitcoin.com News noted that dormant Bitcoin has an average dormancy period of about 13 years. However, the movement does not necessarily indicate selling; it could reflect transfers between self-custody wallets, wallet consolidation, or changes in storage methods. Whether these movements represent deposits on exchanges or actual sales requires separate verification.
