Bitcoin DVOL Hits Historical Low at 35.6, Entering 2.8% Range

Bitcoin (BTC) options market's expected volatility indicator, DVOL, has dropped to 35.6, entering a historical 2.8% range. Realized volatility stands at 47.9, surpassing DVOL and pushing the volatility premium down to -12.3. Ublockchain Data Center reported that Bitcoin's DVOL reached 35.6 on September 18, placing it in a historical 2.8% range, a level rarely seen below in past observations.

Volatility measures how much an asset's price moves over a period. DVOL is derived by Deribit based on Bitcoin options pricing and reflects the annualized implied volatility for the next 30 days. This DVOL level is similar to the low ranges observed between July-September 2023 and July-September 2025, though price movements afterward differed: in one case, BTC rose from $25,000 to $73,000 over six months, while in another it fell from $125,000 to $59,000.

Since entering a historical 5% range on July 10, DVOL has maintained low levels for over two months. This indicates prolonged suppression of short-term price volatility expectations reflected in the options market. The gap between actual price movement and expected volatility widened, with the volatility premium at -12.3 (realized volatility of 47.9 minus DVOL of 35.6), remaining within a historical 4.6% range.

A negative volatility premium suggests that recent actual price movements have been more volatile than what was reflected in options market expectations. Ublockchain notes that historically, lower volatility premiums have been observed 93 times, with an average annual frequency of 16.9. Following such periods, Bitcoin's price change over 90 days had a median of 20.5%, with 87% of cases showing upward movement. However, this historical data does not determine the direction for individual points in time.

Historically, both significant rises and drops have followed low volatility ranges. Thus, it is difficult to conclude whether Bitcoin's next move will be up or down solely based on a low DVOL. DVOL better reflects participants' expected magnitude of short-term price movement rather than direction. A low DVOL indicates lower risk perception reflected in options pricing.
