Bitcoin ETFs See $433.03M Inflow, With IBIT and FBTC Accounting for 96.8%

BlackRock's Bitcoin spot ETF iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) saw $18.44 million in net inflows, according to SoSoValue data. Total U.S. Bitcoin spot ETFs recorded a net inflow of $433.03 million on September 18 (local time), with 96.8% concentrated in IBIT and Fidelity's FBTC.

FBTC led with $310.72 million, followed by IBIT. Combined, the two ETFs accounted for $419.16 million of the total inflow. However, discrepancies exist between data providers: Farside Investors reported a total U.S. Bitcoin spot ETF net inflow of $324.6 million on the same day, with IBIT listed as 'not tracked.'

IBIT is structured as a spot ETF that allows investors to gain exposure to Bitcoin price movements without direct custody of BTC. BlackRock explains in its iShares materials that this structure reduces operational and custodial burdens associated with direct ownership.

Launched on January 5, 2024, IBIT's custodian is Coinbase Custody. As of September 10, the ETF's net assets stood at $6.059 billion, with a management fee of 0.25%. Net inflows refer to the difference between new investments and redemptions.

It's important to note that net inflows into ETFs do not necessarily indicate institutional demand or investment intent. The distinction must be made between client fund inflows through ETFs versus BlackRock purchasing Bitcoin for its own portfolio. Previous trends have shown that ETF inflows and Bitcoin price/volume movements should be analyzed separately.

While IBIT and FBTC dominated the daily inflow, this single-day data does not confirm sustained institutional demand. Further analysis is required to determine the actual investor composition and whether these inflows will continue.
