Bitcoin Holds $76,000 Support as September Bearish Trend Remains Uncertain

Bitcoin (BTC) investor sentiment has weakened from 'FOMO' to 'FUD,' though declaring September a bear market remains premature. Bitcoin is testing the $76,000 support level as U.S. spot ETFs maintain monthly net inflows. AMBCrypto reported that Bitcoin's Fear & Greed Index dropped from 74 to 50 over three weeks.
The index measures risk appetite among market participants. FOMO refers to buying anxiety over missing gains, while FUD signifies growing fear, uncertainty, and doubt. U.S. digital asset legislation delays also weighed on the market. The Senate record shows the Clarify Act (CLARITY Act), a digital asset market structure bill, was rejected in a procedural vote with 49-50 votes against, requiring 60 votes to advance.
Interest rate conditions remain unfavorable for risk assets. The Federal Reserve raised its target federal funds rate range by 0.25 percentage points to 3.75%-4.00% on September 16, the first increase since 2023. However, it is difficult to isolate Bitcoin's direct price impact from this data alone.
ETF flows do not indicate a full sell-off. According to TFTC, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded four days of net inflows and six days of outflows between September 1-15. Monthly cumulative net inflow reached $17.1 million (approx. $234 billion). On September 15 alone, $450.3 million (approx. $61.7 billion) flowed out.
Daily flows have been mixed: $730.9 million (approx. $1 trillion) flowed in on September 3, but some days saw net outflows. The ETF inflows suggest present spot demand has not completely vanished, though large daily outflows may indicate short-term weakening demand, making it difficult to assess market sentiment solely from monthly figures.
On the flip side, a potential short squeeze at around $77,000 was noted by AMBCrypto if large short positions are liquidated. A short squeeze occurs when bearish bets are forced to close, triggering buy orders. However, the actual entities and current status of these positions remain unconfirmed.
Bitcoin's testing of the $76,000 support level has been viewed as a near-term inflection point in prior analysis. The $76,000 support and potential recovery at $77,000 are discussed as short-term price levels, but neither confirms an upward reversal nor downward trend. Current market conditions feature weakened sentiment, U.S. policy uncertainty, rate hikes, and some ETF outflows. Yet September's cumulative ETF inflow remains positive, and Bitcoin has not sustained a prolonged drop below $76,000, leaving the question of whether September marks a bear market open for further price movement and funding trends to confirm.
