Bitcoin Profitability Improves Amid Inflation and Rate Pressures

Bitcoin (BTC)’s on-chain profitability is improving as its Spot On-Chain Profit Ratio (SOPR) has exceeded the 1.0 benchmark for three consecutive weeks, marking the longest period of profit retention since early 2026, according to Crypto.com’s report. However, the market faces challenges from rising inflation and Treasury yields, with U.S. spot ETFs seeing $463 million in outflows last week.
The SOPR indicator compares asset acquisition value to current market value, indicating overall profitability when above 1.0. While Crypto.com interprets this as signaling structural buying interest, it does not guarantee future price increases. The report notes that U.S. August CPI and PPI rose 0.4% month-on-month, with annual CPI at 3.4%, while Treasury yields hit multi-year highs: 10-year at 4.97% and 30-year at 5.35%. This has contributed to reduced risk appetite, reflected in Wall Street indices dropping by -0.70% (Nasdaq), -0.80% (S&P 500), and -1.60% (Dow Jones).
Bitcoin ETFs saw $463 million in net outflows last week, with Ethereum (ETH) ETFs also experiencing $197 million in outflows, totaling $663 million across both assets. Despite improved on-chain metrics, the market remains divided as large cryptocurrencies mostly declined while Polkadot (DOT) and Filecoin (FIL) maintained gains.
Crypto.com’s analysis highlights that Bitcoin’s improving metrics have not yet translated to broader asset strength or industry momentum. Meanwhile, Polkadot is discussing a referendum for its own decentralized stablecoin dotUSD (Referendum 1944), while regulatory developments include the U.S. CLARITY Act amendment and Germany’s proposed capital gains tax on long-held crypto assets.
On the corporate front, Visa is connecting VisaNet payment data to on-chain lending infrastructure, supporting virtual asset card issuers with $160+ stablecoin-linked programs. PayPal has launched PYUSDx, an infrastructure platform enabling enterprise clients to issue custom tokens based on PayPal USD (PYUSD).
