Bitcoin Short-Term Holder Supply Surges to 98th Percentile Three Times in September

Bitcoin (BTC) short-term holder supply rose above the 98th percentile of historical daily increases on three occasions during September. The same period saw Bitcoin prices rebound before declining again, indicating that short-term supply growth alone does not determine price direction. Web3 Data Center reported that short-term holder supply increased by 81,000 BTC on September 10, 68,700 BTC on September 13, and 68,100 BTC on September 15—each exceeding the 98th percentile of past daily increases. Over the five-day period from September 11 to 15, short-term holder supply rose by 128,400 BTC, bringing total short-term holder supply to 4,624,000 BTC. Short-term holders are defined as those holding Bitcoin for less than 155 days.

The indicator reflects the scale of recently moved Bitcoin and is interpreted as either new holdings entering the market or increased short-term liquidity. However, an increase in supply does not necessarily indicate selling pressure. During the same period, Bitcoin prices rose from $76,500 to $78,200 before falling back to $75,600. Historical data shows that 107 instances of daily short-term holder supply increases above the 98th percentile occurred, averaging about seven times per year. Following such events, Bitcoin's price changes over 7, 30, and 90 days averaged +2.0%, +3.2%, and +4.7% respectively. These statistics reflect historical distribution but do not predict specific price movements. The proportion of upward price movement after 7 and 30 days was approximately 62%, while it was around 56% after 90 days.

The lack of consistent correlation between short-term holder supply growth and price direction suggests the indicator should not be interpreted in isolation. Short-term holder supply reflects changes in holding periods but does not directly indicate exchange inflows or actual selling volume. Further analysis is needed to determine whether additional supply increases, combined with exchange inflows, will test Bitcoin's recent lows.
