Brazilian Bank Collapse Sparks Court and Election Fallout

The bankruptcy of Brazilian bank Banco Master, which left billions in losses for depositors and insurers, has now reached the Supreme Court and influenced the presidential election.

Banco Master attracted hundreds of thousands of savers with unusually high returns before collapsing in November 2025. Ten months later, allegations involving its owner, Daniel Borcaro, have implicated one of Brazil's most influential judges.

On September 15, the Supreme Court will deliberate whether Judge Alexandre de Morais should be investigated for contact with Borcaro. This marks an unusual situation where the court is directly investigating one of its own justices.

Police evidence revealed that Borcaro contacted Judge Morais just before his arrest. Morais' wife's law firm had signed a 130 million reais contract with Banco Master, according to newly disclosed documents.

Judge Morais denies wrongdoing, claiming that the disclosure of these materials by investigating judge Andre Mendonca was an abuse of power. The legal dispute has added new complexity to the banking crisis already causing significant financial strain.

Banco Master offered CDB products yielding up to 140% above Brazil's CDI interest rate standard. The bank used high-interest funds to acquire complex, illiquid assets, rapidly growing its operations before the business model collapsed.

The Central Bank of Brazil liquidated Banco Master due to severe liquidity issues and serious regulatory violations. The deposit insurance fund later paid out approximately 40.2 billion reais to 722,000 customers linked to the group.

If investigators confirm conflicts of interest involving Morais, legal repercussions could widen. While Morais claims that his rulings would not be invalidated even if misconduct is proven, defendants may gain stronger grounds to challenge specific cases based on perceived bias.

The scandal is now impacting Brazil's election campaign. Senator Flavio Bolsonaro has called for Morais' removal and urged voters not to support President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, claiming such support would endorse the scandal. However, Bolsonaro himself faces scrutiny over funding related to a film involving his father.
