Canada Eases Capital Requirements for Banks' Crypto Hedge Positions, Effective 2027

Canada's Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI) has finalized guidelines easing certain capital requirements for bank crypto hedge positions, set to take effect in 2027. Under the new rules, banks holding identical cryptocurrency positions with matching maturities across multiple regulated exchanges can offset these long and short positions, reducing the required capital buffer. Previously, institutions had to calculate positions separately per exchange, often leading to higher capital reserves than necessary based on actual risk exposure. The adjustment applies only to 'Group 2a' crypto exposures meeting specific hedge criteria, excluding unregulated exchanges or assets not fulfilling the conditions. Implementation will begin in November 2026 or January 2027, depending on the bank's fiscal year.
