Charles Schwab's Sands Prefers Commodities Over Stocks and Bonds

Charles Schwab maintains a neutral stance on stocks. Chief Investment Strategist Liz Ann Sandus stated the firm prefers commodities over stocks and bonds.

Sandus recently pushed back against 'cookie-cutter' portfolio advice in an interview, noting asset allocation should vary based on each investor's time horizon, risk tolerance, income needs, and overall goals.

'When I hear that cookie-cutter answer, it actually makes me a little crazy,' Sandus said. 'There is no one-size-fits-all allocation right now.'

Charles Schwab manages $1.34 trillion in client assets. Sandus cited this scale to emphasize there's no single correct approach for all clients.

When asked about the traditional 60/40 portfolio (60% stocks, 40% bonds), Sandus noted some other strategists have suggested increasing commodity exposure. She explained Schwab is less favorable toward fixed-income assets like bonds and more inclined toward commodities, reflecting recent market trends moving away from conventional allocations.

Gold-based funds saw $1.8 billion in inflows just in August, the second-largest monthly inflow on record, boosting total holdings to a new high. This data comes from the World Gold Council, cited in industry reports tracking gold ETF surges.

Some strategists have proposed a 60/20/20 portfolio allocation (60% stocks, 20% bonds, 20% commodities), but Sandus did not endorse fixed ratios. She stressed the right mix depends on individual investor goals, investment horizon, income needs, and age.

Discussions around diversifying between stocks and bonds remain unresolved. Whether Schwab's increased commodity allocation is appropriate will depend on current cycles in gold and other physical assets, which are expected to continue for the foreseeable future.
