Circle Arc Mainnet Launches with USDC Fees

Circle ($CRCL) launched its Arc mainnet on the 16th. Arc is a Layer 1 blockchain that supports payment, foreign exchange, trading, and settlement based on USDC and EURC. Circle announced over 100 institutions and ecosystem participants, as well as more than 100 applications joining the network with the launch. Transaction fees are paid in USDC, and Circle explained that transactions are designed to finalize within one second.

Arc was built by Circle to expand its business beyond stablecoin issuance into financial infrastructure operations. It is designed for enterprises and financial institutions to use digital dollars and euros for payments and financial transactions. BlackRock, the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC), Mastercard, Visa, and others are participating as validators or users of Arc.

Global banks, asset managers, payment networks, exchanges, custodians, and DeFi protocols are building services on Arc. Arc connects to Circle's existing services, including the USDC and EURC stablecoins, Circle Payments Network supporting interbank payments, and StableFX, a stablecoin-based forex trading service.

Circle's role is expanding from issuing and circulating stablecoins to operating a blockchain infrastructure where transactions and settlements occur. As more payments and trades happen on Arc, new revenue streams such as network fees may emerge. Currently, Circle heavily relies on interest income from USDC reserve management, which could decline if market rates fall, making Arc a key part of its business diversification strategy.

However, the mainnet launch alone does not immediately change Circle's revenue structure. For Arc to become a true financial infrastructure, it must demonstrate consistent payment and transaction volumes beyond initial participants. Block Media noted that over the next 12-24 months, USDC/EURC trading volume on Arc, the number of participating institutions, tokenized assets, and actual usage of financial services will be key indicators.

Initial participation from institutions must convert into active users for Arc to prove its viability. Transaction volume is a critical metric to determine if Arc moves beyond trial operations. Continued growth in transactions would indicate sustained demand as a payment and settlement network. Expanding the number of participating financial institutions is also crucial for network stability and broader adoption.

Circle aims to grow Arc into a foundation supporting real-time capital movement between financial markets. The Arc mainnet has been expanding its ecosystem prior to launch, with Circle reporting over 700 million transactions processed on its testnet within less than a year. The key focus post-launch is whether actual payment and transaction demand continues.

Circle acknowledged that competition from other blockchains and stablecoins, technical and security challenges, validator operations, and regulatory uncertainty could impact Arc's success. Over the next 12-24 months, trading volume, institutional participation, and financial service usage will determine if Circle achieves its business diversification goals.
