Clarity Bill Vote Fails in US Senate Amid Regulatory Disputes

The U.S. Senate announced that a procedural vote to begin deliberations on the Clarity Act, which aims to establish a federal regulatory framework for virtual asset markets, failed with 49 votes in favor and 50 against. The measure fell short of the required 60 votes needed to proceed.

Seven Democratic senators issued a joint statement on July 22, stating that the current bill does not sufficiently address provisions related to public officials' ethics, consumer protection, illicit finance, conflicts of interest, and market integrity. While criticizing the Republican-proposed legislation as inadequate, they affirmed their commitment to continuing bipartisan negotiations.

AP reported that no Democratic senators voted in favor of the measure during Thursday's vote. The Democratic lawmakers argued that additional safeguards are necessary to prevent conflicts of interest involving former President Donald Trump and federal public officials regarding virtual assets.
