Denmark Launches EU's First Commercial-Scale Carbon Storage Facility

Denmark's Greensand project has officially commenced operations as the European Union's first commercial-scale carbon dioxide (CO₂) storage facility. Ineos Energy announced in a formal statement that Greensand is being operated jointly with Harbour Energy and Denmark's North Sea Fund (Nordsøfonden). The European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) also confirmed on the same day that a commercial-scale integrated value chain for CO₂ capture, transportation, and permanent storage has been launched in Esbjerg, Denmark. Initial storage capacity is up to 400,000 tons annually, with project officials stating that capacity could be expanded to between 4 million and 8 million tons per year if demand for captured CO₂ increases. The CO₂ will be stored in the depleted Nini West oil field in the Danish North Sea.
