Elon Musk Hints at Grok 5 Reaching AGI

Elon Musk stated on September 14 that xAI's next major model, Grok 5, is expected to reach artificial general intelligence (AGI), according to a post on X.

Musk made two posts related to the topic on X, sparking immediate debate among researchers and investors.

Artificial general intelligence refers to AI systems capable of performing at or above human levels across diverse intellectual tasks, distinguishing it from specialized AI systems. This distinction is central to Musk's recent remarks.

Musk previously stated that Grok 4.8, built on xAI's new C++ software foundation with 150 billion parameters, would complete training within the week and transition to reinforcement learning. When asked how close Grok 4.8 was to AGI, Musk replied, 'It will be possible in Grok 5.'

Shortly after, he provided more specific milestones: Grok 4.7 shows performance comparable to Anthropic's Opus 5.0, with strengths and weaknesses in different areas; multimodal capabilities still need improvement. Grok 4.8 is expected to show clear performance improvements, while Grok 4.9 may reach the level of Astran or Paeble. Musk added, 'Grok 5 might just be better than everything. We'll see.'

xAI has pursued an aggressive expansion strategy since its launch by combining unique data sources including large-scale computing clusters, real-time information from X, and engineering knowledge gained from SpaceX.

This approach has allowed xAI to rapidly narrow the performance gap with established research labs in a relatively short time.

The timing of AGI development is significant. If Grok 5 delivers human-level or better performance, its impact would extend far beyond chatbots. Musk has previously claimed advanced AI systems could boost global economic output by years within a few years, accelerating progress across fields from scientific research to robotics and software development.

However, such potential also carries major risks: concerns include AI systems pursuing goals misaligned with human values, challenges in controlling AI surpassing human intelligence, and rapid, unpredictable performance leaps. Issues like job displacement, concentration of power among a few companies, and the risk of malicious use of powerful models remain topics of ongoing discussion among experts.

The timing is also notable as Musk publicly agreed to Anthropic's Dario Amodei's separate request on the same day to slow AI development speed in the industry. This highlights tensions between competition toward AGI and warnings about its risks.

Whether Grok 5 will meet Musk's expectations remains uncertain, but xAI's trajectory clearly demonstrates both the acceleration of cutting-edge AI development and the urgency of addressing associated risks—a fact acknowledged even by those developing the technology.
