Ethena Pay Launches with USDe Balance Rewards Across 48 Countries

Ethena Labs has launched its non-custodial financial app 'Ethena Pay' on September 1, combining USDe balance rewards with Visa card payments. Users can hold USDe in the app for transfers, bank withdrawals, and card payments. Ethena Pay is built on the Avalanche (AVAX) blockchain but focuses on a mobile banking-like experience rather than emphasizing blockchain features, integrating USDe holding, transfers, and payments into one interface.

The official reward rate for balance rewards is 5% annually for Standard tier, and 6% for Pro and VIP tiers. This total includes the base USDe reward rate plus Ethena Pay's 'Daily Boost.' The rates are not fixed; the base USDe reward can fluctuate with market conditions, and Daily Boost may be reduced, paused, or discontinued. While Pro tier has a $15,000 (approx. 20.55 million KRW) limit and VIP tier $50,000 (approx. 68.5 million KRW), official documentation does not consistently detail these limits.

Ethena Pay clarifies that rewards are neither deposits nor interest and are not covered by government deposit insurance. The company is not a bank and does not hold user funds or manage private keys; users store their private keys and seed phrases on their devices. Losing them means Ethena Pay cannot recover, and users must directly use third-party financial services for digital asset features.

The service is available in 48 countries per official FAQ, excluding U.S. citizens and residents from card usage. Specific launch dates for major markets like the U.S., EU, and domestic regions are not provided. Cashback is paid in AVAX, Avalanche's native asset, with tiered rates: Standard (0-4%), Pro (0.5-4.5%), VIP (0.5-5%). Maximum cashback per tier starts at 4% for Standard, 4.5% for Pro, and 5% for VIP. Cashback is paid once daily after transaction settlement, not immediately, and may be reversed for refunds, chargebacks, or ineligible transactions.

AVAX's value fluctuates against USD, so cashback values vary. Unlike USDC or USDT backed solely by fiat reserves, USDe is described as a synthetic dollar supported by crypto assets and short futures positions. Ethena documents note that low or negative funding rates could weaken profitability, but the company adjusts liquidity stablecoin ratios to mitigate this risk.

Ethena Labs states it aims to expand USDe's use cases from institutional lending to consumer payment accounts via Ethena Pay. The app uses its own USDe as the foundation for balances rather than external assets like USDC or USDT. CEO Guy Young said many new regions will be added online within 3-4 weeks, but U.S., UK, and EU launches depend on Visa card partner readiness and local regulations, with no confirmed dates yet.
