Ethereum and Base Wallet Standards Integration Talks Halted Amid Technical Priority Disputes

Ethereum (ETH)’s EIP-8141 and Base’s EIP-8130 were reportedly abandoned as part of efforts to integrate both proposals into a single next-generation wallet standard. The discussions collapsed last week, reflecting growing disagreements over account abstraction that have widened technical divides between Ethereum layer 2 (L2) networks.

CryptoSlate cited Ethlabs researcher Derek Chiang’s remarks confirming the end of integration talks, though no official meeting minutes or joint statements from either side have been released. Account abstraction enables wallets to program features like gas relaying, transaction bundling, and key rotation—moving away from traditional wallet reliance on private-key signing and direct user fee payments.

EIP-8141 structures transactions into multiple frames, separating validation, execution, and fee payment to support gas relaying, programmable wallets, key replacement, and future quantum-resistant authentication. It focuses on increasing design flexibility by allowing validation steps to be placed mid or post-transaction. This proposal has been highlighted as a core part of Ethereum’s upcoming upgrade.

In contrast, EIP-8130 specifies authentication methods upfront for transactions. Nodes can assess authentication types and verification costs before executing arbitrary wallet code, making transaction cost prediction more straightforward. It offers flexibility: L1s broadly allow various authenticators while L2s restrict to standard ones to prioritize throughput.

Ethlabs explained that L2 networks face performance burdens when validating frame-based transactions due to the need for arbitrary EVM code execution and state tracking. Derek Chiang summarized the core difference as a trade-off between scalability and flexibility. Base has released a reference implementation of EIP-8130, supporting user-defined authentication, transaction bundling, and gas relaying through new transaction types and on-chain account setup systems. However, it remains in active development without audit completion, so it is not yet production-ready.

Even if standards diverge, full compatibility loss isn’t guaranteed. EIP-8130 includes fallback mechanisms via ERC-4337 for chains that don’t support the new transaction type, though this requires wallets and apps to handle chain-specific transaction processing separately. The shift could move compatibility maintenance costs from protocol to developers and infrastructure.

For end users, immediate impact lies in wallet usage patterns rather than short-term price movements. If implemented, account abstraction would alter gas payment methods, smart account design, transaction bundling, and wallet recovery processes. It remains unclear whether this development will significantly shift Ethereum’s L1-L2 value accumulation dynamics.
