Ethereum Block Time Proposal to Reduce from 12s to 10s Under Review at 'Hegota' Upgrade

Ethereum Block Time Proposal to Reduce from 12s to 10s Under Review at 'Hegota' Upgrade

Ethereum's proposed reduction of block generation interval from the current 12 seconds to around 10 seconds has entered discussion for the next upgrade. However, EIP-8198 remains at draft stage and is not yet confirmed for network implementation.

Etherlabs (Ethlabs) argues that Ethereum (ETH)'s upcoming Hegota upgrade should include the 'Quick Slots' proposal (EIP-8198), which removes the fixed 12-second slot assumption in clients and allows block generation intervals to be gradually reduced based on network conditions. The official Ethereum EIP documentation classifies EIP-8198 as a draft-level core protocol proposal.

The current draft specifies changing slot time from 12 seconds to 8 seconds, though 8 seconds is described as an initial benchmark rather than the final target. Etherlabs' immediate focus is on reducing to around 10 seconds, with a phased approach: first testing network response at 10 seconds before considering further reduction.

The proposal involves three phases: changing slot time from a compile-time fixed value to runtime-configurable; measuring consensus layer bottlenecks through developer networks and performance tests; and determining optimal slot length. The phased approach stems from the fact that optimal slot length has not yet been determined, as reducing slots without sufficient verification of block propagation speed, validator proof aggregation capacity, and block generation timing could destabilize network stability.

Shorter slot times may reduce transaction wait times for inclusion in blocks, though actual impact depends on whether new timings allow adequate block propagation and validation. Transaction processing structures might also change, potentially improving price updates on decentralized exchanges (DEXs), deposit confirmations at exchanges, and on-chain payment response speed, as well as affecting some Layer 2 solutions and cross-chain interoperability transactions that use L1 block time as sequencing intervals.

Etherlabs stated multiple projects and infrastructure teams believe shorter slots can improve DEX quote efficiency, liquidity provider (LP) revenue structures, and user experience. Combined with FOCIL, it could enhance transaction inclusion and censorship resistance. Etherlabs' focus on censorship resistance and fast block generation in Hegota aligns with prior upgrade discussions, though the final status of Quick Slots in Hegota has not been confirmed.

While speed improvements may increase validator operational burden, shorter time for block propagation and validation could disadvantage participants further from major infrastructure. Flashbots supported EIP-8198's phased approach but emphasized continued evaluation of geographic decentralization and reward disparities among participants during slot reduction.

If implemented, gas limits and blob processing parameters would also be adjusted to match slot length. Clients and applications currently assuming 12-second block times will need modifications. For domestic users, transaction confirmation delays and on-chain price update lags may become key touchpoints. Decentralized exchanges, bridges, and wallet services will be affected by block generation intervals and confirmation timing, though actual changes depend on proposal adoption and network testing results.

If reducing below 12 seconds proves challenging under network conditions, the implementation might only involve changing fixed values to runtime-configurable infrastructure work. Currently, Quick Slots is not confirmed as a feature for Hegota's official implementation list, with final adoption pending developer consensus, client implementation, and performance test outcomes.
