Ethereum 'Glamsterdam' Upgrade Test Successful; Next Steps on Deck

Ethereum (ETH) has successfully completed a major test for its upcoming network overhaul, 'Glamsterdam,' according to CoinDesk on July 17.

The Glamsterdam testnet recently implemented new block creation rules and continued normal block generation. The Ethereum client software developer Nethermind confirmed successful performance testing of one of Glamsterdam's core features: 'Block-level Access Lists.' Nethermind's client passed all 2302 tests, processing 57 billion gas over 3 minutes and 15 seconds with an average throughput of about 2.9 billion gas per second.

The Glamsterdam testnet increased the block gas limit from 60 million to 200 million within an hour of operation—more than tripling it—to allow more transactions, token swaps, and smart contract executions per block. However, larger blocks require more computational resources for verification and network bandwidth, potentially weakening decentralization if smaller nodes cannot process them in time. Glamsterdam aims to improve block processing structure without excessively raising node operating costs while expanding capacity.

Ethereum developers are considering deploying Glamsterdam on the Sepolia testnet next month on June 6, with final details to be confirmed through upcoming official meetings.
