Ethereum L1 and Base Push Separate Account Abstraction Standards

Ethereum L1 and Base are moving forward with different approaches to account abstraction standards after failing to agree on collaboration. If both standards coexist, wallet and application developers will likely need to accommodate chain-specific solutions. Derek Chiang, a researcher at Ethlabs, stated in an Ethlabs post that discussions around Base-led EIP-8130 and Ethereum L1-focused EIP-8141 were formally concluded last week without agreement.
EIP-8141 proposes account abstraction using 'frame transactions.' Chiang explained the difference between the two proposals goes beyond implementation details. Ethereum L1 prioritizes censorship resistance, privacy, and quantum computing resilience, while Base and other L2s emphasize high throughput, regulatory compliance, and user-customizable features. Both sides had sought a unified standard reflecting both goals but ultimately failed to reach consensus as each side would have needed to compromise on core priorities.
The burden of this divergence may fall on wallet developers who will need to support different account authentication and transaction processing methods for Ethereum L1 and Base. Application developers will also need to consider chain-specific account structures and transaction types separately. However, the actual scope of these challenges depends on final specifications and adoption across chains.
Ethlabs recently highlighted native account abstraction and L1 scaling as key priorities in upcoming Ethereum upgrade discussions, aligning with previous reports about Ethlabs prioritizing these issues. Chiang proposed two potential paths forward: establishing a coordination body involving more stakeholders to jointly manage shared resources like EVM, or accepting standard fragmentation and having wallets and applications adapt to chain-specific differences.
Domestic users may experience changes in gas payment methods, wallet authentication, and transaction bundling processes. However, specific changes to domestic exchange deposits/withdrawals or certain applications remain undefined at this stage. Both EIP-8130 and EIP-8141 are still in the proposal phase, with final adoption scope and implementation timelines yet to be determined.
