Ethereum Privacy Features to Become Default, Vitalik Buterin Confirms

Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum (ETH) co-founder, has reiterated his stance that the project will not abandon privacy technology development. Ethereum aims to protect transaction histories, as well as user query information and identity verification processes. In a recent X post, Buterin stated, 'Privacy ends only when it is abandoned. I am not abandoning privacy, but rather increasing focus on it.' The statement was relayed through an original report.
The Ethereum official privacy roadmap divides related work into 'Private Reading,' 'Private Writing,' and 'Private Proving' as of its August 24, 2026 update. The roadmap outlines a shift from optional privacy features to network-level defaults. Private Reading prevents RPC providers from exposing user queries about addresses or smart contracts, reducing metadata exposure like IP addresses, query targets, and access times during wallet balance checks. Private Writing minimizes risks of censorship or tracking during transaction processing in mempools and block creation. Private Proving enables identity, eligibility, and data validation without revealing personal information.
Proposals such as EIP-7805 (FOCIL) aim to enhance censorship resistance by requiring validators to create inclusion lists for transactions, with blocks not following the list being rejected. FOCIL is still in draft form and has not been confirmed for inclusion in a specific network upgrade. Other proposals under review include EIP-8141 (Frame Transactions), EIP-8250 (Kid Nonces), and EIP-8182 (Private ETH/ERC-20 Transfers), all designed to improve transaction flexibility, reduce inter-transaction connectivity, and implement protocol-level shield pools.
Buterin previously suggested integrating privacy features directly into existing wallets rather than creating separate privacy wallets. In a 2025 Bankless interview, he called privacy 'a freedom' and described integrated wallet functionality as a realistic mid-term goal. The Ethereum Foundation also introduced a dedicated privacy team in 2025, highlighting Private Reading, Writing, and Proving as core pillars for applications beyond payments, including governance, identity verification, and institutional data protection.
While the technical direction is clear, practical implementation will require addressing zero-knowledge proof costs, wallet usability, censorship resistance, and anti-money laundering regulatory compliance. Market prices or short-term ETH supply-demand impacts remain unconfirmed, with no set timeline for final proposal approval or mainnet deployment.
