Ethereum and Solana DeFi TVL Rises 21-23% Over 30 Days

Ethereum and Solana-based decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols experienced a rise of over 20% in their dollar-denominated total value locked (TVL) over the past 30 days. However, both assets' price increases exceeded the TVL growth rate, suggesting that new capital inflows alone may not fully explain the TVL expansion. CryptoSlate reported on September 15 that Ethereum DeFi TVL rose by 21.38% and Solana DeFi TVL increased by 22.94%. During the same period, stablecoin market caps grew by 0.68% for Ethereum and 5.51% for Solana, while prices surged 32.80% for Ethereum and 34.67% for Solana.
The difference between price appreciation and TVL growth was 11.42 percentage points for Ethereum and 11.73 percentage points for Solana. TVL represents the dollar value of assets held in protocol smart contracts, which can rise even without significant token quantity increases if asset prices go up. DeFiLlama explains that TVL reflects both price movements and deposit/withdrawal changes. A separate metric, USD Inflows, calculates net capital inflows based on token balance differences adjusted for price.
Therefore, it is difficult to conclude from these figures alone that new investment funds flowed into Ethereum and Solana DeFi at the same rate as TVL growth. CryptoSlate noted that real-time pages update independently, so comparison points may not be perfectly synchronized. Stablecoin market caps are also an imperfect indicator for capital flow analysis, as they reflect liquidity on chains but not necessarily deposits in specific protocols.
Lending protocols like Aave and Solana-based Kamino can boost TVL through collateralized loans and leveraged products such as Multiply. However, the actual scale of borrowing and leverage positions during this period remains unverified. Price increases could have raised collateral values, but whether this led to expanded borrowing requires checking protocol-specific debt data.
Bridge movements also affect chain balance interpretations. Protocols like Wormhole and Circle's CCTP handle token transfers between chains by burning or minting tokens, which can create discrepancies in how assets are represented across chains. This means a rise in one chain's balance might reflect asset movement from another chain rather than new capital influx. Comparing TVL with net bridge inflows is necessary for accurate analysis.
