Ethereum Staking Queue Reaches 1.83M ETH, Activation Delay Expected at 32 Days

Ethereum native staking validator entry wait volume has increased to about 1.83 million ETH, resulting in an expected activation period of around 32 days. This delay is not due to slow transaction processing but rather protocol rules limiting the rate at which validators can enter. Odaily reported on March 16 that Ethereum validator entry wait volume exceeded 1.8 million ETH, with an estimated wait time of about 32 days. In March this year, the wait volume peaked at approximately 3.4 million ETH, pushing the wait time close to 60 days. Earlier, TokenPost reported that the validator entry wait volume reached 2.5 million ETH, with activation taking around 43 days.

The validator queue refers to the process where users deposit ETH and wait for validators to become active. After depositing, they remain in a 'Pending' state until transitioning to an 'Active' status, at which point they can participate in block validation and proof work. Wait times depend on Ethereum's allowed validator entry volume and cumulative wait volume. Ethereum uses a 'Churn Limit' to restrict the amount of ETH that can enter the validator set per epoch. An epoch consists of 32 slots, with each slot lasting about 12 seconds, making an epoch approximately 6.4 minutes long—about 225 epochs per day. The current daily entry limit is 57,600 ETH (256 ETH per epoch). Dividing the wait volume of 1.83 million ETH by this daily rate yields about 32 days.

Wait times decrease if new staking entries are below the daily limit and increase otherwise. This differs from typical transaction congestion, as validator entry is bound to protocol limits regardless of low fees or ample block space. The restriction aims to prevent sudden changes in the validator set, which could strain consensus management and network processing. EIP-7514, proposed in 2023, restricts validator growth speed by setting an upper limit on entry rates. Under this proposal, validators do not receive standard rewards until they reach 'Active' status.

Odaily calculated that with a projected annual staking yield of 2.6%, a 32 ETH validator waiting 40 days could miss out on approximately 0.09 ETH in potential rewards. The exit queue is relatively shorter than the entry queue, as fewer validators are exiting compared to those entering. However, even after passing through the exit queue, users must wait an additional 256 epochs (about 27 hours) for automatic withdrawal processing before funds can be transferred to their withdrawal address, with further delays possible.

EIP-8061, currently proposed, aims to improve validator exit processing capacity while maintaining the entry limit of 256 ETH per epoch. Ultimately, the nearly one-month wait time is a result of Ethereum's consensus structure design rather than network errors. Stakers should account for both deposit timing and activation periods when participating in staking.
