EU Proposes Age Restrictions on Social Media and AI Chatbots for Minors

The European Union (EU) has reportedly been working on plans to limit social media and AI chatbot use for children under 15, according to a report published on April 14. Watcher.Guru X account stated that the EU is considering restricting access for minors under 15 to social media and AI chatbots.

The European Parliament previously proposed setting a minimum digital age of 16 for social media, video-sharing platforms, and AI companion services, with exceptions allowed if parental consent is obtained. It also presented an alternative proposal to set the minimum age at 13 for all social media use. These proposals are part of a report scheduled for release in 2025.

The European Commission's upcoming legislation will determine the minimum age and scope of AI chatbot inclusion through discussions with member states and the European Parliament. Current proposed standards are divided between 13, 15, and 16 years. According to reports, a panel within the Commission has suggested delaying the minimum age for 'social media plus' services, which include AI chatbots, until at least 13.
