EU and Canada Discuss 'Future Alliance' Beyond Trade Agreement

The European Union (EU) has mentioned plans for a 'Future Alliance' with Canada that goes beyond trade agreements to cover manufacturing, technology, energy, artificial intelligence (AI), defense, and Arctic sectors. According to Jinshi Data, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen noted during Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's visit to Europe that the two sides should elevate their relationship to the highest level and explore cooperation akin to associate membership status.

Carney is scheduled to visit France and the UK from 15-17, attending von der Leyen's EU annual speech on June 16. However, the EU Commission clarified in a briefing on June 14 that no country, including Canada, has been discussed for associate membership status.
