ExxonMobil's Chicago Oil Refinery Halts Operations Due to Power Outage

ExxonMobil’s (XOM) Joliet oil refinery in Illinois has suspended operations due to a power outage. The facility processes 264,000 barrels per day and could impact gasoline and diesel supplies in the U.S. Midwest. ExxonMobil reported the power issue occurred around 3:30 p.m. on September 13, halting production until power was restored by 7 p.m. Reuters noted that safety flares activated following the outage, with stabilization work ongoing, and the refinery remained offline as of September 17.

The Joliet refinery can produce approximately 11 million gallons of gasoline and diesel daily, according to ExxonMobil. Reuters warned that if operations remain suspended for an extended period, it could increase price pressures in a fuel market already facing tight supply conditions.
