Fed Acknowledges Slow Response to SVB Risks During Collapse

The Federal Reserve has stated that regulators did not sufficiently recognize the risks surrounding Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) during its collapse and also delayed corrective actions after identifying issues. The Fed released a review led by Deputy Chair Michael Barr on April 28, 2023, which found that oversight authorities failed to fully acknowledge SVB's vulnerabilities and lacked timely measures to address problems.
The report noted that when SVB closed and its holding company SVB Financial Group entered bankruptcy proceedings, there were 31 unresolved regulatory warnings—three times the average for similar banks. The Fed announced it would begin a separate independent investigation in February 2026 but has not yet released any preliminary findings from this review.
