Hong Kong Pushes for Gold and RWA Tokenization Platforms Amid Regulatory Moves

Hong Kong authorities are advancing plans to allow the issuance and trading of tokenized gold and other suitable real-world assets (RWA) through licensed platforms. The government outlined this strategy in its 2026 policy address, released on June 16.

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) will trial the tokenization of foreign exchange fund bills exceeding HKD 13 billion by year-end, aiming to expand digital bond issuance and utilization of digital currencies for payments. The authority also plans to broaden the application scope of digital bonds across all stages, including dividend distribution and repayment.

Additionally, Hong Kong is exploring regulated stablecoin trading on authorized virtual asset platforms and intends to use tokenized short-term financial market funds for payment purposes. HKMA will also push forward central bank digital currency (CBDC) payments with 24/7 operations through EnsembleTX by year-end, while continuing to review additional use cases for tokenized deposits.
