JPMorgan Shows No Interest in Institutional Stablecoin Demand, Tether CEO Mocks

Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino mocked JPMorgan co-CEO Doug Petno after he downplayed institutional demand for stablecoins at the Barclays Global Financial Services Conference. Ardoino compared Tether's position to 'demand for ice imports in the Arctic,' stating that just as there is little need for ice in the Arctic, institutional interest in stablecoins remains minimal.

Petno, who co-leads JPMorgan Chase's commercial and investment banking division, described institutional interest in blockchain and stablecoins as still in early stages, citing lack of interoperability, regulatory hurdles, and KYC requirements. While acknowledging banks could quickly launch stablecoins, he noted no substantial demand from institutional clients beyond crypto trading.

JPMorgan has been building tokenized deposit infrastructure through its Kinexys division rather than launching public stablecoins, while Japanese megabanks are entering the bank-issued token competition. J.P. Morgan Global Research forecasts the stablecoin market to grow between $50 billion and $75 billion, significantly lower than some analysts' $200 billion projections.

Tether's USDT currently holds a market cap of approximately $18.3 billion, with total stablecoin supply at around $31.1 billion. Ardoino referenced Tether’s ongoing efforts to meet institutional transparency demands, including KPMG providing the first 'clean audit report' in August 2024.
