7 JPEX Fraud Suspects Granted Bail Ahead of December 14 Court Appearance

Seven of eight defendants in the Hong Kong JPEX fraud case will remain on bail pending a December 14 court hearing, with former celebrity Zheng Junhui remaining in custody. The Eastern District Court postponed the trial for eight defendants including Lin Zhuo to December 14, according to Hong Kong01, which reported the suspects face charges of fraud conspiracy, money laundering, and inducing others to invest in virtual assets. The alleged amount involved is approximately HK$110 million.
The seven defendants maintained their existing bail conditions, while Zheng Junhui faces four additional money laundering charges related to about HK$18.47 million. Bail does not indicate guilt or innocence but allows defendants to be released under certain conditions before trial. The Eastern District Court handles initial criminal procedures, and this hearing is part of procedural continuation rather than a final verdict.
The JPEX case, which shook Hong Kong's virtual asset market in 2023, saw approximately 2,800 victims with losses totaling around HK$1.6 billion. Over 80 individuals have been arrested since 2023, with 29 charged for fraud conspiracy, money laundering, and obstruction of justice. The case highlighted risks associated with unlicensed platforms, over-the-counter trading, and online promotion leading to investment scams.
