Larry Fink Warns AI Infrastructure Delays Could Make Tech a Corporate Monopoly

BlackRock CEO Larry Fink has warned that if opposition to data center construction and delays in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure development continue, AI will become a monopoly of large corporations. He argued that rapidly expanding computing capacity is necessary to lower costs and improve accessibility.

Speaking at the Canada Investment Summit in Toronto on Thursday (local time), Fink stated, 'The longer infrastructure construction lags, the more AI technology will remain within the realm of large enterprises.' Without sufficient expansion of data centers and power facilities, he warned that computing resources could become expensive due to supply shortages, limiting access to only well-capitalized corporations. 'The faster we build greater capacity, the more we can democratize AI and make it available to more people,' he emphasized.

The comments come amid growing calls within the AI industry for slowing development speeds for safety reasons. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently argued that major AI model developers should establish common safety standards and moderate technological advancement to reduce the risk of catastrophic harm, a position supported by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, xAI CEO Elon Musk, and Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis.

Local community opposition is also hindering AI infrastructure expansion. Public concerns over electricity costs, water usage, and noise have led to widespread resident opposition against data center construction, increasing the burden on developers.

Fink believes that if supply expansion is delayed due to such opposition, small businesses and individuals who cannot afford high costs will lose opportunities to utilize AI. The pace at which the AI industry can expand data centers and power infrastructure while enhancing safety will determine technology accessibility and competitive dynamics in the sector.
