Lumida CEO: AI Investment Opportunities Larger Than Cryptocurrency

Lumida CEO Ram Aluwalia has stated that investment opportunities in AI are larger than those in cryptocurrency as the market approaches year-end. He noted that market reactions to potential interest rate hikes have been largely reflected, with greater growth potential in AI applications and semiconductor supply chains.

Speaking during a September 14 (local time) Coindesk interview, Aluwalia identified Federal Open Market Committee decisions, AI stock adjustments, and the U.S. midterm elections as key variables this week, adding that "AI is still in its early stages." He believes the market has overreacted to potential interest rate increases, citing a CME Fed Funds Futures-implied 86% probability of a hike, stating his view is "non-mainstream" but that he does not expect a rate increase to occur. Without a rate hike, he suggests the market could rebound significantly.

Aluwalia noted concerns over rising oil prices and the 10-year Treasury yield approaching 5%, but assessed the likelihood of a rate hike before midterm elections as low. He expects oil prices to decline again due to temporary factors and the 10-year yield to form a peak near current levels, similar to 2023.

Regarding AI stock adjustments, Aluwalia sees buying opportunities. He interpreted Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's comments on slowing AI development speed as "a minor issue," explaining that Anthropic is shifting from growth-focused messaging to emphasizing profitability and cost discipline ahead of its IPO. While acknowledging cryptocurrency's potential in tokenization and decentralized finance (DeFi), Aluwalia stressed the industry has not yet demonstrated clear value to end users, particularly noting that tokenizing liquid stocks offers limited practical benefits.

He highlighted semiconductor supply chain leaders such as NVIDIA, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, Applied Materials, Micron, and SK Hynix as key AI investment targets. "The U.S. government is the best customer," he said, forecasting that increased government adoption and spending on AI will support the market.

During the same interview, Fairmint CEO Chris Dulanu praised SEC's proposed amendments to the transfer agent rule as a potential turning point for blockchain as an official record-keeping system for securities. He noted the rule has historically been based on paper records but that regulators now recognize databases and blockchain could become formal systems. However, he warned of risks similar to past issues with paper-based stock record-keeping, such as NYSE having to close weekly for settlement during periods of high trading volume, emphasizing the need to address ownership records and custody structures as tokenized stocks grow.
