MetaMask Enhances Wallet Security with Anti-Phishing Features

Crypto wallet security competition is shifting focus to transaction initiation and approval stages. MetaMask announced on September 15 that it has significantly enhanced its wallet security features, responding to the growing need for user protection as cryptocurrency hacking losses exceeded $1 billion in the first four months of 2026.
The updates target two critical areas where users suffer most: transaction initiation and approval. At the transaction stage, MetaMask implemented anti-scam pre-emptive blocking and address poisoning detection features. These prevent funds from leaving during investment or romance scams before users can stop them, with investors reportedly losing $2-5 million monthly through such scams alone. Address poisoning attacks also led to a loss of $50 million in USDT for individual users.
Two of these features are exclusive to MetaMask, while others match the security standards already provided by Rabby and Trust Wallet. At the transaction approval stage, MetaMask introduced additional protection based on its smart account infrastructure, ensuring displayed transaction results align with on-chain outcomes. If discrepancies occur, transactions automatically revert, directly blocking so-called 'Red Fil' attacks that have reportedly stolen 596 ETH from users including MetaMask holders.
Other self-custody wallets have yet to address this vulnerability due to lacking the necessary smart account infrastructure. MetaMask serves over 30 million users across 190 countries, and the company aims to set a new security benchmark other wallets should follow as user protection needs grow. Details are available on MetaMask's blog.
