Morgan Stanley Crypto Chief Says Bitcoin Has Room for Portfolio Inclusion

Morgan Stanley's head of cryptocurrency stated that Bitcoin's long-term investment potential remains open, suggesting further expansion of exposure within client portfolios could continue. However, investor education and validating the asset allocation role remain key challenges. During a September 14 interview with Bitcoin Magazine, Amy Oldeberg, Morgan Stanley's Digital Assets Head, said it is difficult to firmly say 'no' in this era, indicating long-term opportunities for broader integration of Bitcoin into both company and client portfolios.

Oldeberg explained that Morgan Stanley has long examined client demand for Bitcoin investment, noting market conditions have changed significantly since 2024 compared to the present. She highlighted that multiple Bitcoin ETPs are now available in the market with strong performance, including Morgan Stanley's own Bitcoin ETP launched in April which quickly recorded over $600 million in assets.

Oldeberg identified education as a key barrier to adoption rather than the product itself. She clarified that while Morgan Stanley offers physical cryptocurrency via its iTrade platform and manages Bitcoin ETPs, these products provide different exposure levels: 'If you just want price exposure, an ETP might be suitable, but if you want to actually own Bitcoin and move it off-platform or hold it directly, it's a completely different product.'

Regarding fee structures, Oldeberg noted that passive products offering single-asset exposure typically apply lower fees across other asset classes. She emphasized that for Bitcoin to gain mainstream adoption, cost structures should align with similar categories, suggesting more sophisticated products like actively managed funds or yield-enhancing options may emerge in the future.

On Bitcoin's investment rationale, Oldeberg identified its role as 'digital gold' as one of the strongest arguments. She noted Morgan Stanley recently reaffirmed this view through research, expressing interest in seeing Bitcoin continue to develop and maintain this role across multiple cycles. Asset allocation guidelines vary based on investor risk tolerance: 0-2% for moderate risk, up to 3% for higher understanding and risk appetite, and potentially 4% for the most aggressive investors.

Oldeberg emphasized that proposing such allocation frameworks for cryptocurrency is a new approach within Morgan Stanley. She noted Bitcoin's relative low volatility in the first half of this year—sometimes even lower than tech stocks—has led to reduced attention but recent price movements since July and August have reaffirmed its relevance as an asset class requiring continued investor focus.
