MultiversX Mainnet Temporarily Suspended Amid Attack Attempt on VM Layer

MultiversX temporarily suspended its mainnet operations to respond to an attempted attack exploiting atomicity issues in the virtual machine (VM) layer. The attackers reportedly aimed to induce invalid state changes on the chain. On October 20, MultiversX announced that its engineering team has prepared a fix and is testing it in a shadow fork environment. Once testing succeeds, the solution will be applied to the mainnet after coordination with validation nodes, exchanges, and infrastructure partners. The project also stated it is reviewing a recovery plan to preserve finalized transaction records and normal user states while addressing invalid changes related to this incident. Users have been advised not to submit or resubmit transactions and to avoid EGLD and ESDT deposits/withdrawals via exchanges or cross-chain services.
