Novo Nordisk Changes Name to 'Novo' Amid GLP-1 Consumer Focus

Novo Nordisk (NVO) changed its name to simply "Novo" on Monday, unveiling a new corporate culture framework. This move is part of Danish pharmaceutical company Novo's strategy to close the gap with competitor Eli Lilly in the obesity treatment market.
CEO Mikael Dolsten told CNBC that the name and cultural shift are part of the same package for evolving the company's strategy.
The strategic change comes as the company's operating environment has shifted from a stable insulin market to one where patients repeatedly or discontinue treatments, resembling a consumer goods market. The new culture, named "The Novo Way," is based on four principles: customer obsession, competitiveness, clarity, and care and integrity. Dolsten emphasized that speed will help only after priorities are clear, noting ongoing improvements needed across research, manufacturing, and sales.
The rebranding also symbolically reverses the centuries-old Novo Apis bull logo to maintain tradition while exploring new paths. Novo Nordisk A/S remains the company's official legal name.
Investors showed little interest in the news. On Monday, Novo traded at $43.45, down about 15.8% this year and 21% over the past year. The stock has fallen more than 60% from its 2024 high of around $147, when Novo led in GLP-1 competition. While shares saw a slight rebound after Monday, the overall trend remains downward. BMO analysts noted that Eli Lilly's oral Wegovy pill launch alone won't drive a recovery. Dolsten said early Medicare usage among obesity patients is still in its infancy but viewed it as a positive signal for demand. He added that sustained performance improvements will eventually restore investor confidence, as Novo continues to defend its lead against Eli Lilly's competing oral pill.
