NVIDIA CEO Says No New AI Regulations Needed as Market Self-Regulates for Safety and Innovation

NVIDIA Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang has stated that new laws or regulations for artificial intelligence (AI) safety are not needed, asserting that the market's self-regulatory mechanisms can simultaneously ensure safety and maintain development speed.

According to Bloomberg on Thursday (local time), Huang made these remarks at a Salesforce event, stating that the notion that one must choose between rapidly developing AI or safely developing it is a 'false choice.'

'It is entirely possible to achieve both,' he explained, noting companies can adjust their development pace until they are confident in the safety of products before releasing them. He emphasized that such market forces are already at work.

Recent debates within the AI industry have intensified over the pace of advanced AI development. Following a lengthy post by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei advocating for slowing down AI development, former Anthropic researchers have also warned of potential threats AI poses to humanity.

Huang agreed on the importance of AI safety but viewed it as a technical issue rather than one requiring regulation. 'Safety is paramount and a top priority in many respects,' he said, adding that 'safety is an engineering problem.'

He further stated that if a situation arises where it becomes difficult to control companies or products to ensure safety, 'development should be paused temporarily until it works properly.'
