OpenEden Deploys HYBOND on BNB Chain to Expand Tokenized High-Yield Bond Offerings

OpenEden has deployed HYBOND, which tokenizes BNY Investments' global short-term high-yield bond fund, onto the BNB Chain. This expands tokenized assets beyond government bonds into high-yield bond funds, presenting potential for collateral use in decentralized finance (DeFi). OpenEden announced on April 17 that it would offer both TBILL, a U.S. Treasury-backed tokenized product, and HYBOND on the BNB Chain.

HYBOND is a token pegged 1:1 to BNY Investments' 'Global Short-Dated High Yield Bond Fund,' which is managed by BNY Investments. The token was initially launched on Ethereum in April. Investors can mint tokens representing 1:1 exposure to the underlying bond fund after completing Know Your Customer (KYC) verification, with tokens usable as collateral for DeFi lending or borrowing services.

However, immediate trading of HYBOND on BNB Chain isn't guaranteed for all users based solely on this announcement. RedStone will serve as a price oracle to relay the net asset value (NAV) calculated by fund managers to the BNB Chain. The key focus is structuring redemption delays typical in traditional funds to fit DeFi's fast settlement needs.

RedStone Settle, planned for future deployment, aims to allow KYC-completed liquidity providers to supply funds during redemption periods, enabling token holders to settle on a T+0 basis. T+0 settlement means same-day asset and payment exchange. The actual release date of RedStone Settle and available DeFi protocols remain unspecified.

Jeremy Ng, OpenEden's founder and CEO, stated that institutional investors seek to access various yield, liquidity, and credit risk bond assets on-chain within regulated structures, though this does not guarantee HYBOND's yield or liquidity expansion. The BNB Chain already supports tokenized government bonds, money market funds, and stocks as real-world assets (RWA). Institutional infrastructure includes KYC/AML tools, custodians, and oracle networks.

This deployment aligns with the growing trend of expanding RWA and DeFi infrastructure on BNB Chain. While previous growth centered around new applications, this focuses on deploying bond financial products. Tokenized bond funds connect traditional finance rights and pricing to blockchain environments, requiring coordination between investor verification, asset valuation, and redemption processes.

OpenEden clarified that HYBOND is not a security issued directly by BNY Mellon ($BK) or its subsidiaries but represents no direct ownership or equity in the underlying fund. Usage areas and investor eligibility may have specific requirements. High-yield bonds expose investors to credit risk and price volatility of the underlying fund, making redemption structure and NAV calculation key factors.

OpenEden presented this deployment as the start of BNB Chain ecosystem expansion, with further protocol and infrastructure integrations planned. The actual release of RedStone Settle and supported DeFi protocols will be the next milestone for verification.
