Robinhood CEO Says U.S. Enters Tokenization Era as SEC Welcomes 5-Year Experiment

Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev has voiced optimism regarding the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) framework. According to a report by Digital Today, the SEC introduced a five-year temporary regulatory exemption for tokenized stock trading on blockchain-based platforms.
Tenev shared his expectations via social media, stating that 'the U.S. is entering the tokenization era,' emphasizing benefits such as 24/7 trading, instant settlement, and fractional ownership through on-chain infrastructure. He described it as a significant day for financial innovation in America.
The SEC's Innovation Exemption allows qualified Tokenized Securities Trading Platforms (TSVs) to trade tokenized U.S. listed stocks on-chain using automated market makers (AMMs) and liquidity pools. The exemption is limited to five years, with restrictions on the number of tradable securities and trading volume. TSVs must also comply with specific eligibility criteria.
Issuers retain certain rights under the new framework. Third parties seeking to tokenize stocks without issuer consent must notify the company in advance, granting it 30 days to object. If objections are raised, tokenization cannot proceed on that platform.
This approach addresses recent tensions between Tenev and AMC CEO Adam Aron, who previously criticized third-party tokenization of company shares without approval. The SEC's compromise allows for tokenization while preserving issuer rights, creating a pathway for Robinhood to expand its tokenized stock initiatives in the U.S.
