Sam Bankman-Fried's $500M Antropic Investment Still a Burden

Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF) spearheaded a $580 million investment round in Antropic in April 2022. Critics argue that the donor network he led continues to spread AI safety messages funded by his contributions.

FTX founder SBF currently holds no shares, as prosecutors forced him to sell his stake for creditor repayment. His supported Effective Altruism Network maintains its structure of funding urgent causes.

Bankman-Fried invested approximately $500 million in Antropic in 2021, securing an 8% stake. Antropic develops the Claude chatbot.

Antropic's funds from Bankman-Fried went to various initiatives. The Effective Altruism Network continues supporting causes deemed urgent, while organizations like Coefficient Giving and Longview Philanthropy fund AI safety research and model risk assessments.

Coefficient Giving is a major sponsor of the Tabular AI Journalism Center, which pays over 80 journalists from major media outlets including Time, Bloomberg, and The Guardian. The center claims independence.

Longview Philanthropy supports METR (Model Evaluation and Threat Research), which rates risks for advanced models. METR's representative Paul Cristiano previously lived with Antropic CEO Dario Amodei.

Antropic has also deployed around 1,000 Claude-trained individuals to over 400 non-profits through its 'Claude Corps' program, paying their salaries.

Brian Chow, a machine learning engineer and founder of AI news site Effort, criticized Amodei for adopting existing corporate protection strategies. He noted that programs once called 'Effective Altruism' shifted to 'AI Safety' after SBF's arrest in December 2022.

Amodei published a policy essay in June advocating mandatory external testing for advanced models but did not address the capture controversy.

Amodei's stance comes as Washington moves in opposing directions on AI safety. Trump signed an executive order in December 2025 to preemptively block state AI laws, calling safety concerns a 'scam.' Some lawmakers argue developers should bear responsibility for AI safety.

Antropic increased its federal lobbying budget for 2026 by nearly three times to $3.53 million.
