Schwartz Highlights Stablecoin Issuer Transparency in Payments

David Schwartz, Ripple's co-founder and CTO emeritus, has highlighted that in stablecoin payments, the ability for users to distinguish between token issuers is more important than whether a coin is dollar-pegged. On X, Schwartz noted on April 14 that early blockchain design assumed all dollar-stablecoins would use the 'USD' currency code, with wallets capable of linking issuer and currency information without separate tickers. However, today's market features multiple dollar-pegged tokens from different issuers such as Tether (USDT), USD Coin (USDC), and Ripple USD (RLUSD). While all reference dollars, users may receive different assets based on issuer trust levels. Schwartz proposes a dual-ticker system: a common 'USD' ticker indicating the underlying asset, and user-specific tickers reflecting trusted issuers. He explained that while he can receive RLUSD, USDT, or USDC as 'USD', other users or businesses might only accept specific issuers' tokens. This would require payment screens to display both the currency code and issuer information, aligning with XRPL's token identification structure which uses currency code, amount, and issuer account. Schwartz's focus is on wallet and payment service displays rather than changing ledger functionality, emphasizing that users should verify both asset type and issuer before transacting. Stablecoins are designed to be pegged to fiat or assets but do not necessarily share identical issuance, reserve management, or acceptance terms. Payment services may only accept tokens from issuers a recipient permits, making issuer transparency crucial for successful transactions.
