Serbia's SNS Names Vučić as Prime Minister Candidate Amid Election Preparations

Serbia's upcoming prime minister selection through Polymarket will be based on who is actually appointed as prime minister after the election, not simply those listed on the electoral list. With the country preparing for early parliamentary elections, it has become clear that being included in a candidate list and being nominated by a party as a prime minister candidate are separate procedures.

The Serbian government announced President Aleksandar Vučić dissolved parliament and called for early elections to be held on October 25. RTS reported that the Progressive Party of Serbia (SNS) has designated Vučić as its top candidate on the 'Aleksandar Vučić - United Serbia' list and as prime minister candidate.

Polymarket's 'Next Serbian Prime Minister' market offers separate contracts for each individual, including Vučić, Ana Brnabić, and Ilija Srđanović. The market rules specify that the actual appointment as prime minister determines the outcome, with reference to official government information if interpretations are ambiguous.

Prediction markets trade 'yes' or 'no' positions on specific events. In this contract, results are not determined by mere inclusion in a candidate list or party announcements but require confirmation of actual appointment following elections and government formation.

On October 14, student-led 'Student List - Students Win' submitted its electoral list to the National Election Commission, including university professors, teachers, and experts. Srđanović was confirmed as the top name on this list. Brnabić is also included in the SNS list but SNS has designated Vučić as their prime minister candidate.

Finbold reported trading volumes of $13,463 (approximately 18.3 million KRW) for Brnabić's contract and $5,356 (about 7.28 million KRW) for Vladan Đokić, rector of Belgrade University, as of October 16 market data.

The early parliamentary election comes amid student-led protests following the November 2024 collapse of a train station canopy in Novi Sad that killed 16 people. AP reported Vučić announced on September 27 he would step down from the presidency to lead SNS's campaign, with plans to become prime minister if elected.

RTS noted SNS distinguished between candidate lists and prime minister nominations in their reporting of the party's decision. Polymarket's final settlement will depend on government formation and actual appointment as prime minister following the October 25 election.
