S&P Global Acquires OpenZeppelin to Strengthen On-Chain Security Capabilities

Global financial information and credit rating company S&P Global has acquired smart contract security firm OpenZeppelin. The move aims to expand S&P Global's risk assessment capabilities from traditional financial markets into the on-chain domain.
According to cryptocurrency specialist media The Block, S&P Global and OpenZeppelin jointly announced the acquisition agreement on Thursday (local time). The companies plan to combine S&P Global's financial market infrastructure with OpenZeppelin's blockchain security technology to support institutional entry into digital asset markets.
Founded in 2015, OpenZeppelin provides open-source smart contract libraries and security audit services. The company states that its technology has been used in over $3.7 trillion (approximately KRW 5.7 quadrillion) of asset transfers to date. Major stablecoins and tokenized funds have implemented related infrastructure, and the firm has conducted over 900 security audits for digital asset protocols and institutions.
OpenZeppelin CEO Demian Brenner stated that OpenZeppelin's technology and security standards underpin major stablecoins, tokenized funds, DeFi protocols, and on-chain markets. He added that combining with S&P Global would allow them to provide this infrastructure to more financial institutions and blockchain networks.
S&P Global Ratings head Yan Le Pallec said that as digital asset and tokenization markets mature, OpenZeppelin's technology and expertise will provide a foundation for traditional financial firms and DeFi companies to safely build and trade services in the new environment.
After the acquisition is finalized, OpenZeppelin will operate as an independent business unit under S&P Global. Brenner will continue to lead the company. The transaction amount was not disclosed, and the deal requires regulatory approvals before final completion.
